The Night Plague

Its 4:07am and I can honestly say I have yet to sleep.
I'm sitting here waiting for my clothes, Parker and Jolie's clothes, sleep sacs, bed sheets, puppy, wubby, 3 towels, and 2 blankets to rid of puke.  not even dinner puke.  I'm pretty sure the broccoli and strawberries are from lunch, but I can't say for sure.

thats what I'm dealing with tonight/last night/this morning.
whatever.

as tired as I think I am, all I could think about was a cup of coffee.
I'm such a mom.

let's regroup.

Today...err, yesterday I came home to a weird afternoon for me and my girls.  Not fussy - still relatively happy babes (per the usual), but when it was time for dinner neither of them had any interest in anything I placed in front of them. I didn't think too much of it because they refused breakfast for their daddy the other morning, and just about every few months, like clock-work (coupled with breaking a few new teeth) one or both go through a hunger strike.

dinner went a little something like..
baked quinoa with brussels sprouts (refused)
bowl of dry cereal (threw it at the dog)
cereal with milk (slung milk all over my mopped floor)
toasted English muffin with peanut butter (Jolie refused, Parker licked the muffin clean of the PB)
Chobani yogurt pops, frozen.. winner.

so.  to sum it all up - we ate frozen yogurt for dinner.

Jolie then proceeded to cry for 68 minutes, through bath and into her jammies until I laid her in her crib for bed.  Parker refused to lay down, and after 51 minutes of rocking her, she finally gave up and fell asleep.

{10:40pm} Parker is awake again. I'm thinking she must be starved.  I offer a banana and milk, and she refuses both.
rocking, again, gets her back down.

let me go back here for a second.  Jordan is at the fire station.
just so we're clear.  I'm solo.

I had a few more Twin Talk blogging things to do before I called it a night, and right as I was shutting life down for the evening, Parks is awake.
again.
totally not normal at all, so I started to be somewhat concerned.
not hungry, not thirsty, no fever..
I'll stay away from the milk for now, just to be safe.

{1:04am}
awake. again.
I'm thinking she just needs her paci and wubby, so I slide my hand across the mattress to guide me in the dark.
chunky goop.
I immediately pick up my poor girl and she proceeds to throw up, all over me and into my hands. we make it to the bathroom, and by that point she is making sure I know that I have yak all over me in so many jabbers and babbles.
thank you for the comic relief, chick-y.

so, I'm not complaining.  a little puke never hurt anyone.  We both un-dress and re-dress, I strip her mattress (all in hopes that Jolie doesn't happen to wake for any of this circus going on around her.), and take a little carpet cleaner to the places when she missed my hand on our way to the bathroom.

{2:40am} Jolie is sitting up.
I smell it.
puke laced with strawberries and broccoli.  puppy got it the worst.

deep breaths at this point was the only thing that kept me from crying.  I hadn't a clue how to actually handle all this - two puking babies at once.
while solo.
I felt sick.

{2:43am} stripped Jolie.  stripped her crib.
stopped the already running washing machine and threw more to the load- cranked the power to heavy soil and moved on.

where to put these girls, now.  pack and plays.
I have one.  where is my other pack and play.
BB's house.
son of a horse. why is this happening.

{3:00am} ONE pack and play in my room.  king size bed sheet in a crib in the nursery will do for now..
we are all crying at this point.
thank goodness I'm a 29 year old woman that sleeps with a teddy.
here, Jolie.

for the 4th time of the night/morning I rocked a babe to sleep.  while the other cried until I could come soothe her to sleep again.  I didn't have a choice at that point being the only parent in the house.
it sucked.
{3:34am} Parker is asleep.  Jolie - sweet girl, come here.
I was terrified one would get so upset and start throwing up again, but thank you sweet Jesus, that has stopped for now.

{3:44am} Jolie is asleep. Parker is awake.
back to the nursery and again with the rocking.
belly aches are not fun at all, and it is breaking my heart to see these girls so uncomfortable.
Parker is asleep, finally.  I decided to enjoy the quiet and shut my eyes while we snuggled.
slime.
regurgitated strawberry in my hair.
awesome.

and here we are.  I really need a shower.  I really need to go to sleep. those clothes and sheets really need to make their way to the dryer
(my washer sang to me to let me know the cycle was done)
but, I'm really enjoying this cup of coffee.
Jordan will be home shortly and he's got daddy duty this morning.

I'm such a mom.
I can do anything.  bring it.

#twinmomsdodallas

This weekend.  This weekend that has been in planning mode for 3 months.  Finally came.  and is gone.  I actually am going through semi-withdrawls from these 5 ladies after spending over 24 hours straight.. sharing laughter (like laugh till you cry), tough stuff, complaints, successes, and food. Lots and lots of food.

We ate. We laughed. We got our hair done.  We laughed.  We drank (coffee and Coke.. and a couple beers & Bloody Mary's here and there), we ate some more.  We laughed some more.

Ya'll.  I wouldn't change a second about this weekend.
We all needed it.

We met at Meri's house in the Dallas area on Saturday afternoon before lunch- and of course had to take some drill-team photos (as Meredith liked to say..) before the day got away from us and we failed to get in some good ones from the very beginning.   We were determined to document this weekend, and I'd say, and enough strangers can back us up, we did a really good job of it.

Our official #twinmom hand gesture.  So original, we know.

I can say that most of these photos speak for themselves, so basically this will be a whole lotta picture purging, with a little commentary in between.

On to lunch!  Mr. Mesero didn't fail to impress and was so delicious.  I think I probably offended the waiter when I asked him for a BIG bowl of salsa.  He looked at me like I was crazy.
I need my sauce, dude.

Next up.. herrrr (hair).  We were trying to find something 'mom friendly' to do, that was age appropriate for the 28ish year old gals of this group. We all agreed on The Dry Bar - I had never been before, but had been dying to try it forever!
 #ellenselfie

Basically:  It's $40 for them to wash, blow dry, and style your hair.  The best style you'll have in like forever.  And if you hate it, it washes out (duh).
No cutting, no coloring, just styling.

Back to the hotel we went, but not before some AFTER pictures and a little silliness before piling into our clown car.
Big Texas hair at its finest right there, yo.

We stayed at the Hyatt in Downtown and it was beautiful!  The rooms were amazing, and definitely had enough space for 6 ladies to get ready before heading out for an evening.
Without diaper bags.  Without sippy cups.  No puppy's or paci's to worry with..
We were baby free!

#elevatoreellenselfie
These ladies.  SWOON.
Dinner time!
Victor Tangos.  Holy tapas- this was a fabulous place to eat!  I had the Ahi Tuna Nachos.  There were also a couple burgers, and some duck, fig, and goat cheese flatbreads hanging out on the table.
Meri | Ann Marie | Ashley
 Amber | Meredith | Erika

After dinner we spent the rest of the evening on the porch at Tap House.  Drinks (there were drinks..) and amazing conversation with these mommas I will never forget.

MORNING!  We all slept in!

Breakfast and Cafe Mochas at Breadwinners before we all parted ways.  I felt like we just kept eating, but I was always STARVING by the time we sat down to eat!  I was sad to leave them, but really missed my sweet girls and Jordan - man I missed that guy!

Going through all of these I'm sort of missing these girls even more.  Our group texting ceased for 48 hours, but the moment we left one another on Sunday morning the mass texts came flooding again.

I can never get enough of these ladies. So thankful for them and the friendship that has randomly formed. I count them as some of my best girls on the planet, thats for sure.

Toddler Discipline | Time Out

Last week I posted on Instagram (masseya) a picture of Parker sitting in time out.
Yep.  My 18 month olds sit in time out.  They do quiet well at it these days, but we have come from several months of working out the kinks.  I have a VERY strong willed child (Parker) and a VERY soft-hearted child (Jolie). Two completely different personalities, which often means that we discipline them two completely different ways.  Jolie is heart broken to know that she's misbehaved, and Parker finds it hilarious and will push every limit she can.. ultimately ending up in time-out.
Jolie goes to time-out once for Parker's every 10th time.
In one day. (< okay, sort of exaggerating there.. but you can get my point.)
Usually Jolie is coming to get Parker out of time out, and most of the time I don't have the heart to stop the sweetness shared between those two at the moment.
We started out pretty basic with the whole toddler-discipline thing.  Time Out wasn't an option for my 15 month olds at the time we decided to start enforcing consequences for their behavior because they didn't understand the concept at all, but they did fully understand what it meant for me to say 'no', what it meant to upset her sister, and ultimately what it meant to lose a privilege.  To the 15 month old brain, a 'privilege' is whatever she is acting in at that very moment.  It is often Jolie searching to play with a puzzle or toy that Parker is playing with (and vice versa), and she walks right up and takes it right out of her hands (she=Jolie, her=Parker). One thing I had to make sure of was that the consequence came right then and there — I wanted to make sure the discipline was easily associated with the reason behind the reprimand in hopes that she would learn from the experience.
Sutiation A: Not sharing one toy well with sister. Play time with this toy is over.  Instantly.  No questions asked.
Situation B: Throwing food.  These two know exactly what it means when one or both throw their food.  I have a hard time simply whisking them out of the high chair and calling it a meal, but often we opt for a short (like 30 seconds, short) time-out.  After they have understood the consequence for their actions, they get to go back and finish eating. No more throwing food (for the day, at least).
Which brings us to Time Out
We introduced TO (time-out) at 15 months with very little success.  Jolie would throw herself on the floor in a fit, Parker made it into a game and would run way very quickly.  BUT- what we did make sure to do at this age was to reiterate that this was time-out, and that it was in the same spot no matter what.  The thing I like about time-out is that it is easily modified- 5-30 seconds is where we started.  When they were 17 1/2 months the TO card clicked over.  Presently, when Parker and Jolie are being naughty, sometimes all it takes is the simple "Do not do that or you will go to time-out."
The day they realized what that meant changed my life!
Even still, time-out isn’t perfect and it doesn't work for every child.  I still get the child that beats the wall in frustration, throws herself on the floor and proceeds to roll around, and then there's the heartbreaking cry.  But- it works for us, and my girls understand.  For those that have never attempted time-out, it will just have to take some work to get into a routine with disciplining your little with this technique.  Here are a few of my suggestions to make time-out a success:
  1. Choose an appropriate time-out spot. This must be consistent.  Your child will associate that spot with 'time-out' and will know what is to be expected when sitting there.  This is why it is not recommended to use the child's crib or nursery as a time-out spot.  The negative association with time-out and those spots could be bad news for naps and nighttime.  Don't get me wrong- SO many times I have thought and wanted to just stick a girl in her crib!  Especially in the beginning.. Parker or Jolie (or both!) in their crib and they are forced stay put!  Our spot is underneath the bar in the living room, on the other side of the kitchen.  She is easily placed in my eye's view, but secluded enough for it to drive the point across.
  2. Act consistently. Again with the consistency.  Give your toddler one warning to stop what she’s doing, and if she doesn’t obey, speak firmly,  and follow through with the time-out. Escorting Parker or Jolie  to her time-out spot is almost as bad as making her sit there.  They already know whats coming before we get there. Someone once told me that counting to three was pointless -that just gives your kid three extra seconds to be bad.  I decided after hearing (and agreeing) that I would do my best to never be the one that counted 1.. 2.. 3.. ONE time, and if after I've asked once, that should be all it takes to obey.  Consistency is key. Without it, you’ll send your babe a mixed message, which will confuse and/or encourage them to push your limits to see what she can get away with next time.  Parker is the queen of this!  Clearly, I still need some work on this.
  3. Be flexible. If you’re not at home to utilize the regular 'time-out' spot, it can take some extra brain-storming to make time-outs work, but it is definitely possible.  There are a few instances that require immediate time-out no matter where we are: biting, hitting, and yelling (this is P&J's way of 'talking back' - yelling out in frustration at her daddy or me is not tolerated).  So.. whether we are at the park, the grocery store, doctor's office, or the mall.  Time-out is held if any of these three things occurs.
time-out at the grocery store.
Parker bit her sister over sharing space in the shopping cart.  Not acceptable, girlfriend.
Once time-out has been held, we always pep-talk it out and 'make-up' after the fact.  The explanation of why she was put in time out is always given.  No matter what you choose to do when your child misbehaves, be sure to explain to her why she’s getting a consequence. The hope is that this is how they'll learn what not to do.
It’s a parent’s endless challenge to find what works best for you personally and your children at any given time. This is what personally works for our family.  Jordan and I are on the same page about the way we discipline our girls, as well as their grandparents (who take care of Parker and Jolie several days a week).  Everyone must be on board with the way you choose to manage your toddler's acting out or it won't be successful.  Consistency with the consequences as well as who it is coming from play a large roll in the success and failure of your discipline.
Find what works, or seems to work, and is within your comfort zone as a parent.  YOU are the parent of YOUR child.  Someone else telling you how to raise or discipline your kids can make it difficult to maintain and cause undue stress in an already stressful situation called life and parenting in general. You can already count the ball in your court as a win - the way you love them.  No one can do that better than you.  There days when I feel like all I'm doing is saying 'no', or 'go to time-out'.  I find myself questioning how I'm doing as a parent- how I'm modeling these girls to be women.
One thing is for sure,  I love them to the moon and back.  Although I feel like I'm on a roller coasted failing to cease circles, I can always know one thing is for sure.
Feel free to email if you have any questions!

18 Month Well Visit

rainbow halo / Sweet T Baby
8 months since they started walking..
6 months since their first birthday was celebrated..
..and a mere 4 months away from intense planning of their SECOND birthday party
(colors and theme are picked, don't you know.)

How has this happened?  Did I keep track of every memorable moment?  Not a chance.

There isn't enough note paper in the world, my friends.   But you better believe I did my very twin momma best to enjoy every second of the last 18 months.

I know I've already given there update for this month HERE, but this was before we got to visit Dr. Butler for our well check.  We've made lots of progress since we saw her at our 15 month check-up, and in celebration of hitting double digits not the growth chart.. well we practically threw a party.

Thats blog worthy news, ya'll.
Parker's 18 month stats:
height | 32.8 inches (62%)
weight | 23 pounds 8 ounces (20%)
head |  47.6 cm (45%)

Jolie's 18 month stats:
height | 32.3 inches (66%)
weight | 22 pounds 4 ounces (21%)
head |  46.4 cm (64%)

Between the months of 15 and 18 we hit a couple of major growth spurts.  At their last check up they were both barely 20 pounds: Jolie was just 9th percentile for weight and Parker was in the 6th percentile.  Our pediatrician was very pleased with how well they had grown.

Me too.
I would have been questioning the office scale after what I've witnessed these girls eat this last month.  Jolie- that girl cleans her plate AND whatever is left on Parker's plate at the end of the meal.  finally.

Individuals News
Parker is healthy as a horse.  Long and skinny, still, but thats okay with me!  Outside of her normal allergies, she got a clean bill of health from Dr. B.   Jolie is a healthy girl, too!  She had a little redness in her right ear (which has become the norm when she is teething), but other than that, she's great!

Teeth
Speaking of teeth - they both have a mouth full of teeth: Jolie has 12 going on 14 with her two bottom canine teeth popping through as we speak.  Parker has 12 teeth and her 13th coming in, her bottom right incisor.  I can see where one of her bottom canines is next up. It was recommended that we make an appointment with the dentist at their 1 year well visit, but I decided to put it off until they had a few more teeth.  We went from a measly 2 teeth at 10 months old to 6 teeth at one year.  Then more than doubled that in 6 months.  We have an appointment in August for their first visit to the dentist, and Butler was totally fine with that.  Until then we will be busy brush, brush, brushing our tiny teeth at bath time (see more bath time favorites HERE). Puppy has developed good dental hygiene as well!

Car Seats
We got the official blessing to flip the carseats to forward facing.  Texas State Law says 1 year AND 20 pounds before the child can face forward.  As of this month, Parker and Jolie meet both of those requirements.. and since they are very long and their legs hang over the side and up the back seat we opted with the O-K from Dr. B to flip them around. I DO KNOW the "best practice" recommendation is 2 years.  This is our decision.

Pacifier (and Thumb Sucking)
Jordan is ready to toss that paci out the window.  He's already planning the Trash the Pass(ci) ceremony.  I am NOT ready for that.  Mainly because Parker doesn't take the paci but for nap and bed, and occasionally when she isn't feeling very well or when she is really upset.  But, Jordan thinks now is the time to worry about it.  He HATES the paci.  My problem is that paci and her Wubby go together.  She can't have one without the other, so it will be a transition to A.) NO paci and NO Wubby or B.) Only Wubby.  Dr. Butler said it was completely fine to for her to continue with her paci until age 2.  Age two is when we really need to start figuring out a way to get rid of it - which was what I have been promising Jordan all along.  As for Jolie- I was shocked to learn that her thumb sucking is okay until the age of four.  I have a feeling the dentist will have something different to say about that..

Speech
At 15 months it was acceptable to have 6 words.  Now at 18 months, it is still acceptable to have 6 words- more like 8-10, but 6 is totally fine.  Parker and Jolie have several words, most of them are inconsistent, but they will say them on occasion.
mom
dad
dog
daph (Daphnee our dog)
hi
bye
go
no
yes
car
side (outside)
bath
eyes
nose
brows (eyebrows)
Papa
purple
yellow
chicken
peaches
banana
done
Dr. Butler mentioned that over the next 6 months they will drastically change in their speech development. More words, more often, and formation of two to three words into sentences.  Parker and Jolie communicate back and forth all day long- full communication with each other, just not with me.  I feel like the odd man out on most days.   Going into their 18 month appointment I was fully aware that it is common with twins to have delayed speech, but Dr. B put my mind at ease.  I can't wait to see what the next several months has in store for their little voices.  Parker's sweet speak melts me on a daily basis.

We wrapped the appointment with the final shot of their baby-hood and walked out of the patient room after choosing a dum-dum from the prize bucket.

I can't believe we don't go back until they are TWO.  I made their 2 year well visit appointment just before we left: December 9th, 2014 at 2pm.

Good grief.

WE EAT | 'Berry Good Oats

If I let my children own the pen that writes the meal plans they would choose oats for every single meal.  We eat oats often.  Peanut butter oats are a favorite.  Sometimes we put granola in it.  Most of the time we add a little sliced banana.  Other times its brown sugar and cinnamon.

I continue to try to be creative as the week's go by for a variety of options to mix in to this whole grain.

Today I give you..
 Berry Good Oats

(serves one)
1/4 cup whole oats
2/3 cup (organic) whole milk
1 tablespoon strawberry fruit preserves
1 sliced strawberry
3-5 sliced blackberries
2 teaspoons chia seeds

You might be questioning the chia..but the girls hardly notice them, and it gives these berry oats a little nutritional boost. Chia seeds are higher in antioxidants than blueberries and have more calcium than whole milk. They are very high in Omega-3s, magnesium, fiber, iron, potassium, and protein.  I bought 2 pounds of chia seeds at Sam's for like $7 bucks.  Bulk isn't always the way to go, but it is for sure in this case.
Jordan uses chia in his smoothies and oatmeal, so we have a family of chia users up in here.
..can we talk about these bowls?   Nûby™does it again with their Sure Grip™ Bowl.  I actually think this is really intended for spoon feeding younger babies, but the polypropylene bowl is practically non-breakable (when thrown from the alpha heights of a high chair..) and the rubber bottom helps keep the bowl put when Parker and Jolie are attempting to spoon out their food, rather than chasing it around their entire tray.
The contour shape helps to keep the oats on their spoon rather than in their lap and eventually onto my floor.

Ginny has learned very quickly where to lay for the best chance of catching a taste.
Parker never fails to provide the very best foodie faces.
I have no doubt that in twenty years she will question my photo opportunities.
The same way it pains me to view the hundreds of baby pictures of me with a mullet.

Adorable, yo.
Jolie Grace.
WHY does she put the spoon in her hair at every meal?  If we aren't wearing a big fat hair bow, we are wearing our food.

I find oatmeal for hours after breakfast is over.
Owell- at least they are loving what they are eating.  Saving a little up on top that mop won't hurt anybody.

These oats are good!  Berry Berry good indeed.

A {Rose} Gold Lined Double Swoon

Is it quiet possible to love your babes too much?  I mean, really.  I don't know that I could fill my heart ANY more with how I feel for these sweet girls.

Wait.

There is ALWAYS more room for baby fashion. I love it more than I think I love it for myself.  I have said it before (HERE) and professed it again (HERE) and the first time might have been (HERE) or but I can't say that for sure.

Either way- small business owners/shops/creators - my hats off to you.  You know what you are doing and how to make me swoon over each and every piece.

Thank you to Brittany of BFaith Photography for capturing Parker and Jolie in the most precious setting.  We've discovered the beauty of the 10 minute impromptu shoot at 7pm.

That second wind these girls seem to get after dinner {I've talked about on Instagram (@masseya)}- it proves for amazing pictures in the evening.

Remember when I was dying over the Freshly Picked rose gold moccs (HERE)?  Well.  They were finally restocked  and I got my hands on a couple pair. Jolie is on the wire telling all her bebe girlfriends about them..

Sloane is on the other end since Parker won't pick up..
I may or may not have attempted to fit the size 4 on my size 8.  Don't judge me. Susan.  You've outdone yourself with these ones.  I was nervous the leather of the metallic would wear off poorly - but NO way.  Such high quality, and worth it if you find yourself on the fence for making the splurge.

Thats what you call a Double Swoon right there, and holy crap.  I'm in love.

I thought this was precious.. and then I went off and died when I saw the next one.  When Brittany sent me this one, I was in a meeting.  I nearly fell out of my chair.

Someone get BabyGap on the phone.
Give a sister a ride, yo.

Very special thank you's:
