Chasing My Tail

I think this has been the longest blog vacay I've had since the girls were born.  In my defense, life has been over the top insane these last couple of weeks and in my attempt to get organized, blogging has fallen over to the wayside.  Whoops.  Short of our weeklong vacation (blog post to come about that.. and about pumping and traveling for all that have inquired..) I came home to starting a brand new job the very next day.  SO excited about my new position as Wellness Director (more money, more time with my family, and more responsibility = all good things in my book!), but I've been a tad overwhelmed with getting acclimated to my new role and the expectations that it entails.  Soon enough it will all come together, just getting there is the main goal at this point.   

The girls' 9 month birthday has come and gone.. and I have yet to even think about what to write to them.. and even take their 9 month pictures.  I need to get on that..

But- for now, I will start with this weekend. 

I work from home on Fridays and after a call I had scheduled that morning we took this little bit to see Dr. Butler.  At her 9 month well visit (Sept. 9th) we found that she had a viral ear infection and a mild rash as a result- so we started her on antibiotics and all was well.  The only indicator that she even had an ear ache was because she was pulling at her ear a little bit, but we would have never thought twice about it if we wouldn't have taken her for a check up.  Neither Jordan or myself had even noticed the rash- but it was 11pm when we finally got home and their appointment was the next morning at 9am!

The rash progressively got worse over the course of the week, so we decided to go back to the pedi to see if we could get some kind of prognosis.  We left with no prognosis except with the conclusion that she has had an allergic reaction to something and sadly we have no clue what.  Over the past two weeks so much has been different (the girls ate store bought food for the first time, environment, exposure) we cant quite pinpoint the root cause.  Dr. B says that an allergic reaction can last up to two weeks.. poor girl has some major redness going on, but Benadryl has helped tremendously with the irritation, but the bumps are still there.  Waiting it out for now.. Doesn't seem to bother this smiling face, so that's a plus!      

Saturday Jordan was at the fire station, as all was per the usual with me and my girls. Crazy messy faces with their morning solid meal.  That morning it was blueberries and bananas!
After naps me and the girls headed to Blue Goose to watch the Aggie game with Ashley, Jarrett, and the Lally's (Ashley's parents).  Of course Parker made the rounds and ended up in Jarrett's arms the majority of the time, causing nothing but ruckus.

Sunday morning I was up early in attempts to get in a quick shower while the babes were still asleep- and lo and behold, my usual heavy sleeper decided she wanted to hang out with momma while she got ready for church.  Sweetest little thing on the planet- she chatted me up while I did my hair and makeup.
Getting to church on Sunday morning is quite the event in and of itself.  On this particular day we parked ourselves in the parking lot and while I fed the girls, Jordan went and stood in line for the child care classes to check the girls in.

While we were waiting for Jolie to finish up her morning meal, Parker serenaded us with her precious little voice and silly grins.  I was dying at her silliness.   This was actually the first time we left the girls in the baby room during church and in the words of the 'teacher'  "They were angels!"

After church we ran to SAM's to grab a few things.. which almost always turns into a $100 trip.  There is always more than what we came for in our basket by the time we get to checkout. 

I am mildly obsessed with the double shopping carts at both SAM's and Costco- which always prompts a photo sesh. 

Parks was over it at this point.  I swear she rolls her eyes at me when I hold my phone 3 inches from her face and begin hollering her name to 'look at mommy!'
Jolie on the other hand.. this Looney Tune cracks me up.  She was the grocery good inspector this day.  Normally Parker has to have her hands on every thing that gets put into the buggy, patting it down before it goes into the cart, but Jolie took on that roll for this shopping trip. 
After SAM's it was home for a quick change into our Rangers gear and off to the game!  One of the MANY perks to my new gig.. Access to Rangers (baseball), Stars (hockey) and the Mavs (basketball).  Leave it to me to nab tickets to the Rangers in my first official week of working there.  We had great seats, and there was a slight breeze to keep up cool.
Because the game was at 2pm, the girls napped in the car on the way to the game and didn't get their normal 2 hour nap in the afternoon.  This little was a sleepy head by the 6th inning- but I don't think her daddy minded to have her snuggle close.

This picture is a perfect example of Parker relationship with her monkey Wubbanub.  She has yet to EVER suck on it like a paci, but holds it all night and for comfort through the day.. twirling the tags- which you can see by looking at the twirled tags on that monkey's bootie.
Hot HOT HOTTTTT it was yesterday- but its all good.  I think having two fireball babies on your lap will raise the heat index by 100 any day. 

We had a great time- even if that Rangers did end up losing.  We couldn't seem to catch a break.. or a ball for that matter. 

SO- officially my blogging break is over.   In the process of collecting and organizing my pictures over the last couple of weeks to get them up for your viewing pleasure:)

Jolie's Journey | Torticollis

If you follow this blog regularly, you know about our little miss Jolie and the torticollis she was diagnosed with at her 2 months  check up.  I hardly remember those visits to the physical therapist, although my check book does.. started with weekly visits, then bi-weekly, then monthly.  It had all flown by so quickly.  But I do remember the day she was diagnosed- what she was wearing, what I was wearing.. Not because it was some insanely rare diagnosis- tort is really very common- but just the fact that I had fought for them so very hard throughout my entire pregnancy and won every battle we came across (premature funneling, shortened cervical lenght, bed rest, placenta declination, c-section, and delivering tiny babies avoiding the NICU) and this was unavoidable.  Also- the feeling I had of defeat when the moment Dr. Butler picked her up from my arms she immeadiately stated the obvious that she had torticollis. 

What?  What is that? Why didn't I notice this tilt that is pretty noticeable now that you mention it?  Am I a bad mom for failing to notice that?  What do we do now?  I had about a million and one questions running through my brain at that point and couldn't sum up the words in a good sentence.  Thank goodness for Jordan and his own curiosity.  He asked all the questions I couldn't.  Dr. Butler proceeded to explain what this all meant and that she will need therapy and it will resolve with some help.  Torticollis is the result of various circumstances, but in Jolie's case, it is due to her position in the womb.  Come to find out that this is the case for many sets of twins due to the limited space in their mother's belly.

Whew... ok.  So, we can do this!  We left the appointment with a peace of mind and a referral to Our Children's House in hopes to get in sooner rather than later.


Jolie's shortened neck muscles on her right side caused her to 'tilt' and did not allow but about 30% range of motion.  These pictures were taken (Valentine's Day 2013) just shortly after she was diagnosed with torticollis.  
After starting therapy with Suzan, we learned so much about this treatable 'condition'.  Torticollis, as well as the baby developing a flat head, can be caused by the shape of the mother’s uterus and the position of the baby in utero, which explains why miss Jolie developed tort and Parker did not.  Jolie is Baby A, which means she was lower and very squished. I carried Parker right smack in the middle, while Jolie was very low and smooshed to the side of my uterus.  Towards the end of my pregnancy, Dixie, our regular sonographer, was scanning my back and side to get images and measurements of Jolie.  We also learned that untreated torticollis can result in a misshaped head and can later mean surgery for correction. 

Being the proactive, Type A individuals that Jordan and I are, we took on therapy and stretching full force. 
We started doing the stretching that Suzan taught us in therapy before every feeding.  At that time, the girls were still eating 8 times a day, so we got a good amount of home PT in between our visits with Suzan.  We went every Monday for about 2 months and finally once Jolie reached 100% range of motion we started going bi-weekly.
We continued to stretch her several times a day and she continued to improve every time we made a visit to Our Children's House.
One day we walked into therapy and I made the comment that Jo has been so straight the past couple weeks.  Suzan pointed out that she noticed that Jolie had started to hike her shoulder to compensate for the straightening of her neck, so we learned some new stretches in therapy.  We would encourage play with only her right hand and arm for 10 minutes at a time to prevent that hike as well as leaning Jolie to her weakened side while holding the opposite shoulder down.  She loved watching herself in the mirror while we did this.  We would sing to her and dance, and the silliness of momma and dad would be of distraction for what stretching and exercises we were actually doing.

Finally around 7 months we transitioned to monthly visits.
At this point Jolie has full range of motion and just a 5-7% tilt.  Technically the baby is 'cured' with just a 5% tilt, but Jolie was never consistent with that 5%.  She continued to revert back to the tilt she knows, like a sense of comfort.  I can only imagine it is tough work to hold her head straight, so she gets especially 'tilty' when she is sleepy or doesn't feel good.

Attempting to cover all our options, Suzan mentioned that some find success in using a TOT collar.  Suzan explained that she wasn't sure much therapy could cure Jolie's tilt- almost like she was being 'lazy' with her neck. We noticed that she was straight about 80% of the time.. and the other 20%, she would either tilt completely or hike her shoulder up.  We decided on the TOT collar for further correction and to see if this would resolve her tilt and encourage Jolie to hold her head straight 100% of the time.

About 2 weeks ago we ordered the collar and once it came in we went for a fitting with Suzan.

We learned that Jolie has an extremely tiny neck.  Not only is it really short compared to Perfect Posture Parker, but it is really little.  She gets that from her momma.

..by the way.. what is it my child is playing with.. looks like some kind of chain saw toy??

She did really well with her fitting and didn't seem to mind having it on for the most part.
Ove the last two weeks I feel like we've seen real improvement with her tilt.  She wears the collar 3-4 times a day for about 15-20 minutes.
I was very fearful, and pretty skeptical that the collar would hinder her mobility and motor skills, but it hasn't slowed her down one bit!  I do notice that she tolerates the collar better when she is in a good mood.  We've learned not to do the collar when she is hungry, sleepy, or having just woke from a nap.  She is less likely to wear it the full 15 minutes.
Some days dealing with Jolie's torticollis has felt like a lifetime and other days I'm impressed with how far we've come since her diagnosis.

What I do know is that all the stretching, physical therapy, and time spent working on her functionality has been well worth it to her daddy and me.
Next month is thought to be Jolie's last PT appointment with Suzan.  Very bittersweet, as she has seen us through it all, but so exciting to think we could be finished and Jolie's teensy neck to be normal.  I am so very thankful our proactive pediatrician that decided that we did not need to wait another month before dealing with torticollis.  We got Jolie into therapy quickly and was able to tackle tort head on and aggressively from a very early age.  I’m also so very grateful for the solution to this disorder to being so common and easy to fight against.  Throughout this past year, Jordan and I have been blessed with passionate and talented medical professionals- from my OB/GYN and perinatologist that carefully walked me through pregnancy and delivery and now with our amazing pediatrician and physical therapist, Suzan. There have been many blessings along the way, and I am amazed to see God's hand in every single bit of it.  I know He is always there- but there is something about the feeling you get when you can actually see His plan panning out just as he intended it.

He is so so GOOD.

8 Years and Counting...

Last week the hubs and I celebrated our 8 years anniversary (good grief!).  A little confession.. last year we celebrated up and down that it was our 8th year to be married.  BOTH of us were convinced of this fact, which indeed was wrong.  Silly, right?!  I finally figured it out when I was going through many pictures and trying desperately to find that 'lost' year.

I blame pregnancy brain.  I do.  It is real- I think.  (and it has yet to go away, by the way). 
So..this year indeed is  the 8th year we've married. 

One of the best parts about being married in August?  Besides the fact that all the 'cool kids' do it.. it happens to fall right in the middle of Restaurant Week here in Dallas/Fort Worth- and what better way to celebrate our anniversary than to be the hard core foodies we wished we were for the night?

This year we have a couple restaurants lined up to visit, but for our anniversary dinner this past weekend we opted to try Hibiscus.  The atmosphere was perfectly romantic and our waitress was such a doll!  It makes the entire evening much better when you have staff that really knows what customer service is all about.

Dinner was fabulous.. Baked Dungeness Crap Dip to start,  we both ordered the petite filet with asparagus per the recommendation of the bestest and chose the wood roasted carrots, goat ricotta, almond, and the deep dish mac and cheese as our sides.  Holy yum.  Seriously delicious. 
For dessert.. after failing to convince Jordan that we needed like 2 more of those deep dish macs, we chose the chocolate layer cake.  LAYER cake was no lie.
Killed it.
After dinner, the staff was polite enough to roll me to the door and crane lift me to the car.  Dinner was so good.  I thought about it the rest of the weekend!

A movie was next on the agenda for our anniversary date.  Going to the movies was our most favorite thing to do pre-babies.  Now we watch lots and lots of movies in the comfort of our own home:)

We opted for We Are the Millers- HILarious!  I love Jennifer Aniston and her quirky little self made me laugh the entire night.
Selfies pre-movie!  I grabbed the biggest tub of popcorn and the tallest vanilla root beer they had and plopped my pretty little behind into the seat, kicked off my heels and was ready for the movie.  The trip back from Dallas took about 45 minutes- I was able to work up my appetite well enough to house that popcorn and root beer just fine.  Don't judge.  Besides- it was date night. The entire point of GOING to the movies is to get the popcorn and candy- right?  (says the dietitian..)
Thanks to Ashley and Jarrett  for keeping our littles and sending silly pictures of our happy girls while we were out.  So thankful for sweet friends that we trust and love that love our girls as much as we do.  We shall see if their love for P&J still runs deep after they keep them for 1/2 the week we are away in Mexico.  Those girls know how to party at 2am..and 3am, and 4am.  All before its time to eat at 5:30am.

It actually just hit me how soon we will be leaving for our Adults Only trip.  Holy Hot Sauce- getting excited!
After such a good weekend- I was missing my girls extra on Monday, so Daddy brought them up to work for a lunch date with momma.  Subway was the meal of choice, and even though it was no filet or deep dish mac and cheese, it was just as delicious because my company made it that much sweeter.

I adore these babies- and although Parker's face isn't super enthused, she was all silly and wiggles. 
Happy anniversary, Jordan- we are one super blessed couple.  Love you!

Baby Food Making {Part 2}


This go round of baby food making was fun!  I still have quite a bit of puree cubes left in my freezer, but the OCD Type A personality I am, I always want to be prepared.  Over the last month or so I watched my freezer stash dwindle, and it was making me uptight, so over the weekend I decided batch prep and cook some more for my girls.  Now that the girls are much more interested in trying new foods, getting creative with their puree mixtures was super entertaining.  It is sad, but I’m actually more excited about food not requiring teeth more so than my own these days *sigh*
Grocery List
1 (16oz) package frozen mango chunks: $2.88
1 (16oz) package frozen sliced peaches: $2.66
1 (16oz) package frozen whole kernel corn: $0.98
3 apples: $0.99/lb (on sale); $1.76
1 bag carrots (organic): $1.98
3 medium-large sweet potatoes: $0.88/lb; $3.19
3 green pears: $1.27/lb; $1.51
1 haas avocado (on sale): $0.50/each
4 medium zucchini squash: $1.78/lb; $2.22
3 ripe bananas: $0.52/lb; $0.78
1 (18oz) shell blueberries: $3.84 (bought at SAM’s)
1 (32oz) container plain yogurt (organic): $3.24
Total cost: $25.54

Of course this batch cooking included some of our favorites like cinnamon sweet potatoes and banana sweet potatoes (recipes found here) but this go round I added in more fruits and a few more veggies we’ve never tried before.  This time I opted to use some frozen fruit- in particular, the mango and peaches because I found that most of what I was able to get out of the fresh fruit was more expensive than buying it frozen and getting all fruit- not having to mess with the seed and prep of those stone fruits.

When looking for frozen fruits, make sure there is nothing in the ingredients list but the fruit. 

Occasionally there will be ascorbic acid added, and that is okay.  Just stear clear of the added sugars and syrups.


Recipes

Apple & Mango Puree
1 apple, peeled and diced
1 cup fresh or frozen mango chunks
Makes about 2 ½ cups

Place apple and mango chunks into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 20 minutes.  Place fruit mixture into a blender or food processor and puree. Add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.

Depending on how ripe your mango is will determine if you actually need to puree the fruit.  I prefer to puree to make sure there are no large chunks for my babies to swallow.

To deseed a mango: I use a kitchen tool specifically for cutting mangos (found here).  If you do not have one of these tools, start by cutting the mango lengthwise, along the side of the mango pit. You will be cutting off its flesh from one side then repeating the same process on the other side. You will then cut the ends off the mango pit.

Mango & Peach
1 cup frozen mango chunks
1 ½ cups frozen peach slices

Place peaches and mango chunks into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place fruit mixture into a blender or food processor and puree. If needed, add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.


Banana & Blueberry
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 ripe banana, diced
Makes about 1 ½ cups

Place blueberries into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place berries into a blender or food processor and puree. If needed, add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.

Strain blueberry puree through a mesh sieve to remove skins (my girls don’t like the skin texture just yet.)  Add the strained berries and banana into the blender or food processor and puree until smooth.     

Pears, Blueberries & Peaches
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 medium green pear
1 cup frozen sliced peaches
Makes about 2 cups

Place blueberries, pear, and peaches into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place fruit mixture into a blender or food processor and puree. If needed, add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.  If desired, you can also strain the fruit puree through a mesh sieve to remove skins. 


Cinnamon Applesauce
2 apples (Macintosh, Gala or Braeburn)
Makes about 1 cup

Peel, core and cut apple into slices/chunks.  Place slices or chunks into a steamer basket or a pan with just enough water to slightly cover apples. Boil/steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place into blender or food processor, sprinkle with about ½ teaspoon cinnamon and process until smooth.

Pear Puree - Basic
2 green pears
Makes about 1 cup

Peel, core and cut pear into slices/chunks.  Place slices or chunks into a steamer basket or a pan with just enough water to slightly cover pears. Boil/steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place into blender or food processor. 


Zucchini Squash Puree - Basic 
2 medium zucchini squash
Makes about 1 cup

Wash squash thoroughly and cut into small slices or chunks. Do not remove skins. (*You may remove skins however an infant of 7-8 months old should be able to digest squash puree with skins on)  Place squash chunks into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15-20 minutes.

Place into a blender or food processor and puree. Add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency.  Always be sure to thoroughly wash and cleanse the fruits and vegetables that you will be using to make your baby food- since the skins of the zucchini will be eaten, make sure to gently scrub before steaming and pureeing

Carrots & Zucchini
4 medium carrots
2 medium zucchini squash
Makes about 2 cups

Peel carrots and cut into small chunks.  Cut ends off the zucchini and slice into small chunks.  Place veggie chunks into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 20 minutes.

Place into a blender or food processor and puree. Add water or breast milk as necessary to achieve a smooth, thin consistency. 

Sweet Potato, Corn, and Apple
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced
1 apple (Macintosh, Gala or Braeburn), peeled, cored and diced
1 cup frozen corn
Makes about 2 ½ cups

Steam frozen corn for 15 minutes.  Puree until smooth.  Strain corn puree through a mesh sieve to remove kernels- remainder will be very watery.  Alternatively you can put the steamed corn through a food mill. 

Place potato and apple chunks into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 20 minutes.

Place fruit/veggie mixture along with the strained corn into a blender or food processor and puree. Adding water or breast milk won’t be necessary as this puree is very thin already.  I mix this into oatmeal.

Semi-Homemade Yogurt
After chatting with my pediatrician, I came to find out that most recommend starting babies on yogurt around 7-8 months of age.  So the fact that my girls come barreling the moment they hear us pop the seal of a yogurt, is completely okay and they are ready for some yogurt of their own!

After spending 8 dollars on a week’s worth of store bought ‘baby yogurt’ I decided that using a large container of plain whole milk yogurt will save me money (and save on added sugar).  Plus- it gives me the flexibility of adding my own flavorings to the girls’ yogurt.

Banana, Avocado, & Yogurt
1 ripe banana, diced
1 ripe haas avocado, diced
¼ cup plain yogurt
Makes 1 cup

Place banana, avocado, and yogurt in a food processor or blender and process until smooth consistency.  This puree can be very thick- you may add more yogurt, water, or breast milk to thin it out a bit.

Peach Yogurt
1 ½ cups frozen sliced peaches
1 cup plain yogurt
Makes about 2 ½ cups

Place peaches into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place peaches into a blender or food processor and puree.

Strain peach puree through a mesh sieve.  In a medium sized bowl, mix the yogurt and strained peaches until combined.  Refrigerate to use that same day or the next- immediately freeze the remainder.       

Blueberry Yogurt
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 cup plain yogurt
Makes about 2 ½ cups

Place blueberries into a steamer pan with just enough water visible through the steamer basket. Steam until tender; about 15 minutes.  Place berries into a blender or food processor and puree.

Strain blueberry puree through a mesh sieve to remove skins.  In a medium sized bowl, mix the yogurt and strained berries until combined.  Refrigerate to use that same day or the next- immediately freeze the remainder.       


Reminders for preparation:
-Get a good processor or blender.  Pureeing is so much easier (and quicker!) when you have a good machine.  I love my Baby Brezza- as it steams and purees all in one! 
-Prep all your fruits and vegetables in one step.  Get the 'worst' part (in my opinion) over with right at the start.  After that it’s all about steaming or baking, and pureeing!
-Always be sure to thoroughly wash and cleanse the fruits and vegetables that you will be using to make your baby food.   Even if you are not using the peels or skins, and even if you buy organic, you should always cleanse the produce. I got a tip from a sweet momma-friend in my life about how she 'washes' her produce. Combine a 10:1 water/vinegar solution and scrub the skins of all produce prior to prep- antifungal and antibacterial:)
