seven (postpartum) nursing must-haves

after four babies and a ton of trial and error I've (albeit barely) made it through the postpartum season of motherhood.  I feel like I've learned a thing or two about what you really need to be a successful nursing mama.. aside from loads of time and patience.. and WORK these are my top seven must haves for nursing.
a well fitting (nursing) bra.
I will confess to not investing/researching/caring about a great nursing bra before and during my nursing experience with the twins.  after 13 months I was SO over the lack of support and discomfort cheap nursing bras offered (in my opinion).. after replacing my $15 nursing bra multiple times throughout that year I could have bought three of the higher priced bras! with Baker I was determined to find an awesome bra, which is when I fell in love with the Cake nursing bras.  I have also recently been introduced to the Bravado Designs silk seamless nursing bra while I was pregnant with Brady this time around and ya'll.. I LOVE IT!  so comfortable and offers support I need for everyday wear.
creams and butters aren't something that is a long term requirement (thank goodness!), but those first weeks are tough!  getting acquainted with your newborn always includes cracks and really painful discomfort with nursing.  I have tried the common and very popular creams and ointments and really didnt like them at all and my babies didn't either.  I had a girlfriend bring this nipple butter from earth mama to me while in the hospital and I really came to love it!  and Brady didnt mind it one bit, either:)
comfortable nursing tanks/tees
I never really invested in any kind of special nursing tops or tanks in my other pregnancies.. I always just made it "work" and either lifted my shirt up or pulled it down.  button down tops and dresses are always helpful!  this time around I wanted to make my life easier, especially around the house the first month or so when I feel like all I'm doing is feeding a newborn!  after falling in love with the Cake nursing bras while pregnant with Baker, I came across the Cake nursing camisole (I'm wearing it under my postpartum hospital robe in the picture above) while shopping to replace my old nursing bras. it is seamless and easy to layer under clothing and the quick release clasps are the feature I loved most with their nursing bras and this cami has them as well.  it has a built in full support bra so I can wear with by itself both in and out of the house.  I had another mama recommend these nursing sleep tee shirts from Gilligan & O'Malley and I bought two and brought them with me to the hospital- they are the softest tee shirts I have ever worn! I wouldn't ever wear them out of the house because they have a side slit that runs all the way to the underside of your arm but they have made nursing at night SO easy.
I have a giant love.. and I mean GIANT love for BLANQI.  I wore their maternity support leggings which tremendously helped with carrying the weight of my third trimester belly and loved the maternity support tanks (I have them in both white and black!) to wear under sweaters or cardigans and even by themselves.  a seamless comfort that is hard to find while feeling so large at the end of pregnancy.  their postpartum "nursing" leggings have definitely met the standards I expected after having Brady.  I have worn them both around the house and out running errands and love them!  they are very high waisted with a rise that meets my bra line and offers a discreet way of nursing in public (especially when I am lifting my shirt to nurse) as well as supports the "loose feeling" of your postpartum abdominal area.
through reading many blogs..and having many other experienced mothers recommend them, I finally tried lily padz. where have you been all my life!  these stay put and actually stick to your skin so you can wear them without a bra (although for me that would be a giant floppy mess) and while swimming!  they will be perfect for summer and multiple trips to the pool ahead!  the pressure of the silicon pad prevents leakage and they are reusable through proper care and cleaning.
good breast pump.
I have always used the Medela brand breast pump, so with all of my kiddos I have just gone with what I know.  I invested in the pump in style tote  four years ago in my breastfeeding journey with the twins and used the same pump with Baker.  I could already tell by the end of it with Baker that my pump was pretty much toast.  worn out.  beat.  basically used to death through three babies.  insurance has beefed up their breastfeeding support game and now offers FREE pumps to those pregnant moms wishing to breastfeed!  I decided to take this route to see what my insurance would cover and I found that they covered the Medela pump! it is SO EASY to get your free pump.  google "insurance covered breast pump".. I used edgepark.com because that was the first option that popped up.  I looked up my insurance, selected my pump, and about a week later my brand new pump landed on my door step.  usually you aren't able to order it until the last part of your third trimester, but shipping is usually next day so ordering it within just a couple weeks of your due date isn't a problem.
healthy diet.
I get so many questions about maintaining a healthy diet while breastfeeding along with looking for ways to cut out calories to lose some of that baby weight in the meantime. I work in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) about 4 days/week with teeny babies and often my care overlaps to the mothers trying to boost their supply while exclusively pumping to feed their baby.  a few things I always tell my moms (and follow myself!)
THREE most important things during breastfeeding:
protein + calories + fluids
I can always tell a dip in my supply when I haven't gotten in enough water throughout the day.  I shoot for about 100 ounces (12-14 cups) of water/fluids and always have my water bottle nearby while nursing (especially through the night!)
you need at least 1500-1800 calories every day.. average needs are closer to 1800-2200 calories.  since breastfeeding requires about 400+ calories you can still lose weight while consuming a good amount of calories and see little effect on your supply.
whole grains and healthy fats are key in promoting a healthy milk supply.  you should shoot for about 65 grams of (healthy) fat every day.. think peanut butter, avocado, flaxseed, olive oil, nuts/seeds.
I was introduced to Milkful lactation bars which offers a super easy and healthy way of boosting your supply through the magic of food alone.  I've been eating a bar about once/day as my afternoon snack- with about 250 calories and 11 grams of milk supporting fats, its the perfect pick me up with the added benefit of milk boosting ingredients.  I love all three flavors but their signature blueberry almond coconut is really delicious!

Black Friday + White Plum

It was this time last year that I had just found out I was pregnant with our sweet miracle babe.
Just 6 days after our second baby went to sit at His right hand on October 11th..October 17th was the day our dreams came true to grow our family from four to five.  I had NO idea how much her perfect placement into our lives would impact me, my heart, and the understanding of grace.
Oh Baker girl.  You and those crystal grey eyes and double chin.
Homegirl is getting straight heavy cream, I tell ya.
But serious- I am one very thankful mama.
It has hit me over the last couple weeks how thankful I am for her.  I cant stop looking at her.  smelling her baby head, and tickling her chunky thighs.
THAT smile!  Letting me into her tiny world with every happy flicker of her sweet little eyes.
The tears are welling as I type..
#truth
She is my constant reminder that miracles and the purest of all love exists.
With the end of another Thanksgiving.. I am left with tired feet, hilarious attempts at family photos and extra thankful for pants without buttons.
Pants without buttons saved me from that second helping of mashed potatoes.  Scooped with a yeast roll.  Dipped in the gravy.
All the carbs, you guys.
Lets get back to the pants with no buttons.
Leggings, my friends.  I'm talking about leggings.
We all know about my leggings love.  They do such good things for the post baby bod.
Plus.. with the extra stretch in the tummy from housing now three babes in two pregnancies, I look like I'm about 5 months pregnant after a bowl of cereal.
Give me all the leggings.  Please.
After reading White Plum's Leggings Guide it brought a whole new meaning to how to wear them for our body types.  'Are they pants?'  No.  So.. cover your bum, girls.. 'What shoes do I wear with them?', 'How do I manage a fun print?'

Soaking up the Sweet Mess

Halfway through the week and I feel like my days are running together.  Time.is.flying.
I'll tell you what.. being a full-time stay at home mom right now has been amazing - but you ladies that really do this SAHM gig all the time -- and do it so well -- are a different breed of women.  You ladies are r o c k s t a r s.  The days of being at home with my girls have bene amazing.  Totally amazing.  But the moments when you want to pull your hair out because a couple of toddlers are jumping on the couch and you have said over and over to STOP jumping on the couch.  But since you are feeding a baby -- and they know it -- they both laugh.  In your face.
I'm telling you.  They smell the frustration.

But then again - waking up to sleepy snuggles every single morning.  Spending quality time with my people all the time.  Going to Target to shop the $1 bins whenever I want (you do it, too) -- I would love that.
Trying to soak up all this sweetness -- or sweet mess that life seems to be right now.  These last 6 weeks have slipped by in a blink and I have 6 weeks left before going back to work.  It is messy and some days I feel like we have sat in front of the tv for too many hours and some days when I am solo for 24+ hours I find myself texting Jordan to tell him that 'I'm a bad mom because..' only to have him remind me that I am not a bad mom.
But truthfully most days, even the messy ones, are absolutely amazing.

Anyway- a few of my random thoughts for you on this Wednesday.
Most of which occur during the wee hours of the morning and most of which are also mindless.
A mind mess, if you will.
..and just because she's so darn cute..
Good gracious.  The double chins.  Never looked so good!
I hope you are having a great week!

Postpartum Favorites | Baby

Since the last time I was dealing with a couple of newborns I have come across some amazing brands, products, and the sweetest baby things that have me thinking "where were you two and a half years ago?"  Looking back I realized that there was not enough research I could have done to prepare me for motherhood.  BUT - the most invaluable information and recommendations came from other mama friends - and hopefully one or two of you might find this helpful.  I still cannot believe we are 5-ish weeks into having Baker in our lives, but I suppose time truly flies when you are living your life in three-hour increments!
Postpartum Favorites
B A B Y
1. graco little lounger // when the twins were born we bought a pack and play and set it up in our room for them to co-sleep and it worked well for what we needed it for.  We planned to do the same for Baker and for her first couple nights she slept in the pack and play.  On the Saturday after coming home from the hospital we planned to run the errands we had hoped to accomplish the day I went into labor.  We were browsing the baby aisles (at Target) and Jordan walked upon the display of a million and one options for a sleeping baby.  I had mentioned early in my pregnancy that I wanted to get a bassinet for Baker and he quickly told me 'no' and later I learned, and then laughed, that he was thinking of a traditional bassinet .  Looking at all the options he was super intrigued and we ended up going home with the graco little lounger.  While I cannot say that this one is better than another, because I never used one like this with the twins, I really like it!  It seems to be comfortable for her, semi-elevated for easing her tummy after nursing at night, and a huge plus is that its affordable comparative to other options on the market.
2. just born deluxe swaddle //  this swaddle was recommended to me by my pediatrician after I told her that I woke one early morning to Baker being on her side (???).  The little thing wiggled herself in such a way that she was sleeping on her side instead of on her back.  This swaddle has a 'cradle pad' that promotes back sleep and basically encourages her to stay put during the night.  My Houdini baby always finds a way to get her arms out- and this swaddle has the option for both arms-in and arms-out swaddling. I was so glad to be introduced to this product!
3. little unicorn swaddle blankets //  cotton muslin blankets are a favorite in this house- especially these ones.  They are the softest and most comfortable blankets we own.  We use them for swaddling her during those newborn catnaps throughout the day, but also as a nursing cover, carseat cover, and carrying them around the house as a place for Baker to lay.  Not to mention that Little Unicorn has the most adorable prints, ever.  I took a couple in my hospital bag and got several compliments on them from doctors, nurses, and guests.
4. mustela hair & body wash + lotion // I talked about our first try of mustela HERE when Baker had her first bathtime experience.  She cried the entire time but I am happy to report that her bath taking has become much less of a screamfest and more enjoyable on her end.  We are still using the Mustela and really love it!  Her baby skin remains moisturized until her next bath time - and not to mention how yummy she smells.  In the early months we had a heck of a time trying to find out what exactly we could use on Parker's sensitive skin (Jolie has used several soaps and lotions and nothing seems to irritate), so I'm always a little hesitant to try new products, but mustela has proven to be all that it say it is:)
5. solly wrap // where have you been all my motherhood life?  I say this as more of a statement, because holy free hands, baby wearing is amazing. As I sit here and type out this post remembering the long day before of cluster feeds and cranky babies (x3) I have Baker wrapped to my chest sleeping soundly.  I also made dinner, bathed, and put the girls to bed all whilst wearing her.  I borrowed the Moby wrap from a family member after the twins were born, but the fabric was thick and I couldn't get a tight enough wrap - or at a least I didn't feel like I could - with their small size.  By the time they were big enough to be worn correctly I sort of felt like I missed that window because they hated it.  Not this time.  I was determined because I knew I needed more hands to manage Parker and Jolie.  I also appreciate that the fabric is stretchy and lightweight for the summer months here in the south.
6. cloud b on the go travel sound machine // we have this machine for her nursery, but have been using the travel sound maker while she is in our room.  Its easy to tote around with us in the car and around the house as we need it.  While Parker and Jolie love ( and still love) the white noise, Baker is a big fan of the music sounds.  She loves her a lullaby.
7. nursing pillow // I have the boppy as well as dr. brown's gia nursing pillow  // my only experience with a nursing pillow has been with the gigantic My Breast Friend Twin nursing pillow.  The thing has clips to make sure it stays put.  I received a boppy pillow as a gift while I was pregnant but never used it because I always fed Parker and Jolie at the same time.  This go-round with a singleton I have gotten great use out of these nursing pillows!  I keep one in the bedroom and one in the living room so I don't have to move one from room to room.  The Dr. Brown's nursing pillow is designed to put the baby at an angle while nursing to help with digestion.  Anything to assist with my baby girl's tummy, especially when nursing at night.  I use them interchangeably and often will prop Baker on the traditional boppy pillow while I am nearby.
8. golden hill onesies -- for summer babies these are uber soft, light and breathable.  We have been living in them! These are super stylish for my teeny babe and the prints are pure perfection.  I am not ashamed to mention that I have nearly every print these hip mama's offer in their shop.  Darci and Becca started their small business from scratch with the girl mom in mind.  For the cooler weather months approaching (yippee!) these would be awesome as layering pieces - under cardigans and sweaters for a smooth non-bulky look.  I wish these onesies were around 2.5 years ago for Parker and Jolie to wear.  Stay tuned for a fun giveaway with golden hill!  I am excited to be partnering up with them and sharing some of their goodies with you!

Other baby things..
My favorite iphone app // baby connect (activity logger).  I used this app with the twins and brought it back to life again when Baker was born.  I mainly use it for tracking her last feedings and diapers but you can record naps, milestones, pumping, your baby’s mood, and temperature, etc.  I am surely not using the app up to its capacity, but appreciate all that it has to offer.

What about you?  Any newborn favorites you just can live without during those early weeks?

Postpartum Favorites | Mama

I am approaching 6 whole weeks since Baker was born and I have survived (almost) yet again with a newborn.
But.. not without a few of my postpartum pregnancy essentials.
Postpartum Favorites
M A M A
1. seamless hipster panties
They are the softest panties I have ever worn with just enough stretch to make me feel comfortable in my postpartum body.  I am still opting for the full coverage panty *just in case* and these are seamless, making for a smooth look under my clothes.
2. benefit ooh la lift
I'm tired.  Really tired.  It makes all the difference when I wash my face first thing in the morning and use a little of this highlighting cream under my eyes.. hiding those dark circles due to the 11pm-3am-7am nursing sessions.  It is perfect for giving my face the 'oomph' it needs even when I don't bother putting on a full face of makeup - which is happening pretty often these days.
3. lansinoh nursing pads
I never had to use these when I nursed the twins because I always tandem fed them.  I also never had the let-down sensation when I heard them crying.. all those things new mamas experience.  Not for me.  I didn't even buy any nursing pads before Baker's arrival to prepare.  Why would I need those??  Oh.  But I do.  This time around its like I have a whole new set of hormones running because all of the above is what I've got going on.  Thank you Amazon Prime for getting the bulk boxes of nursing pads in the mail to me in 2-days or less:)  I like the Lansinoh brand the best because they are cotton and absorb well.. and they don't stick.  You mamas know what I'm saying.
4. bravado! seamless nursing bra
I have talked all about this nursing bra before (HERE + HERE), and this one is another favorite of mine.. I've actually purchased a couple more of both so I have more on hand and don't have to do the laundry to make sure I have a clean bra.  They have by far been the most comfortable bra I have ever worn.  I have also been wearing my favorite bralettenot a technically nursing bra, it is stretchy enough to be BF'ing friendly and also really comfortable.
5. pure body tees + tanks
These tees and tanks have once again carried me through my entire pregnancy and into postpartum.  I have mentioned them about a million times in my past 'favorites' posts - both in my tin pregnancy and most recently with Baker, and here I am showing love again.  They are very stretchy and hold their shape, so it makes it easy for nursing.  I also layer the tanks under non-nursing friendly tops so I am not exposing my entire (postpartum) midsection when its time to feed Baker.
6. dr. brown's hand pump
I do have a large full function pump and have used it often, but I have started to use this hand pump here and there and really like it!  Baker has been sleeping longer hours during the night, which means I am f u l l in the early morning when my milk production peaks (between 4am-7am) and need to get the rest off for comfort after she has eaten an hardly made a dent.  It is easy to have sitting on my nightstand rather than pulling out my electric pump, untangling tubes and cords, all while making a ton of noise.  This is just easier and takes hardly a thought to use.  I also find it to be handy when we are going out without Baker and I need to pump while I'm away.  Much more convenient.. more on breastfeeding and pumping later:)
7. nipple balm
Baker and I have gotten the hang of breastfeeding now, at 5 weeks, but in the early weeks I was left pretty sore while we both were still learning.  My left side was definitely the worst and applying this (as well as breast milk) in between feedings helped tremendously. There's a bunch of different options on healing ointments, but this one I just ordered in my bundle with Honest prenatal vitamins and DHA.
8. silicone scar treatment sheets
For my fellow c-section mamas.  After my 2-week post op appointment I was given the go ahead by my OB to start applying treatment to my c-section scar.  I used the regular over the counter stuff after the twins, and it was just okay.  I stopped using it after about 6 months mainly out of laziness, but I honestly didn't see much change.  My OB was able to cut out my old scar, and so I have nothing residual showing, sort of like a 'fresh start' with hopes that I won't get lazy this time.  She mentioned silicone scar treatments, and I found this at CVS but I'm sure Walgreens would have it, too.  The sheets cover right over my scar and you are able to wear them for up to 7 days (according to the box), but I usually change it out every day and use Mederma PM Cream at night.
9. water bottle -- 32 ounce everyday water bottle
Hydration is just as important postpartum as it is while pregnant- especially when breastfeeding!  I usually tote this 32 ounce water bottle around all day - refilling it at least 4 times.  If I don't I totally wake up feeling like I have a hangover.  Nursing is serious business and takes a lot more out of you than you might realize.. I learned the hard way and dealt with a headache for basically the first 2 weeks postpartum.

Hopefully this is helpful!  I'll be back tomorrow with my postpartum favorites for Miss Baker:)  XO!

Packing for the Hospital | Baby Number 2

Technically baby number three, but this is my second delivery.. but that was just too much for a blog title, but you get the idea.  As I am approaching the end of my 35th week of this pregnancy, I guess I would say it might be a good idea for me to start thinking about what is going in my hospital bag.
Truth be told..I basically broke the internet searching for what in the world to pack in my hospital bag when preparing for the twins' birth. I scoured pinterest that led me to blogs that led me to making a list longer than you can imagine for what I was supposed to be packing.  But really, what else could I have done while laying in the bed for months leading up to our hospital stay..? I was a master list-maker from the thrones of bed-rest.. and I can promise that Jordan can attest to this.  Needless to say - I was overwhelmed and basically I over-packed.  I literally brought two bags for me (and the girls) and didn't even crack the zipper for the 5 days we were there.  I thought for sure I would be dressing the girls (and myself) while we were there.. which meant I needed 10 outfits between the two of them alone, and they never came out of the white tee shirts the hospital provided until the day we loaded them into the carseats for discharge.

I had a friend ask me recently if I wrote a blog post about packing for the hospital when I delivered Parker and Jolie, and the answer was a big fat N-O.  For my second delivery I decided to take what I learned the first time I packed a bag and put it to use this time.  The List is what I think will work for me based on what and how things when the last time I was post-partum

The Essentials | ONLY

  • Toiletries -- basically bring whatever makes you most comfortable for your post-baby stay.  For me it is shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, toothpaste, mini shower pouf, toothbrush, facewash, hair dryer.. you get the idea.  I was in the hospital for four nights and five days, and because I was in the hospital for a longer stay than typical, I brought my regular size bottles of toiletries.  I ended up only taking a shower twice while in the hospital - I wasn't in the best shape and moving around the first couple days was pretty painful (bed rest and abdominal surgery don't mesh well..)  but, after I did- I felt SO much better! You could probably stand to leave the hair dryer at home, but that's totally your preference.
  • Lip balm -- I mentioned my favorite balm in this post, but have also come to love the Honest Co. organic lip balm after receiving a sample it in my bundle of prenatal vitamins last month.  Hospitals tend to have dry air and I ended up sending Jordan out for some last time, so I am sure to pack it for this hospital stay.
  • Hairbrush + hair ties -- the topknot is my very best friend, so I want to make sure I've got something to hold my hair up - especially when me and the little miss are learning to nurse and of course it is a refreshing feeling to get  your hair off your neck.
For Mama
  • Support Binder/Abdominal binder/Belly Band -- whatever you call it, you will appreciate it after your baby is born.  My OB prescribed and provided one while I was in the hospital, but it is my understanding that not all docs will do that - so it might be something to ask about before heading to the hospital for delivery.  It helped to make it seem like not everything was going to 'fall out' the moment I put two feet on the ground to make the journey to the bathroom 4 steps away.
  • Stretchy, soft + comfy clothing -- The first day of my stay (D-Day) I was in no shape to get dressed.  It wasn't until day two that I was ready to be in my own clothing. I made sure to pack a couple of each item incase I needed to change due to a run in with teeny baby poop/pee or spit up.
    • Pants (2-4 pair): For my fellow C-section mamas, look for pants that you can wear higher or lower than your bikini line - yoga pants with the wide, fold-over waistband are great.  I have this pair and this pair in my bag ready and waiting to be worn.  Super soft and super stretchy.. and even though they are maternity, they are really perfect for postpartum wear.
    • Bras (2): Just say no to the underwire.  I stopped wearing underwire bras months ago.. and if you are planning to breastfeed you'll need to say bye-bye to that kinda support from now until the end.  I have packed two nursing bras - this one I have talked all about before (HERE), and this one is new and as pretty as a nursing bra can get:)  I also plan to wear my favorite bralette so I'll have it with me in case I need it.  While not a technical nursing bra, it is stretchy enough to be BF'ing friendly.
    • Tops (2-4): If you're planning on nursing, keep in mind ease of access for breastfeeding.  I wore these maternity tanks throughout my pregnancy with the twins, and they were fantastic for breastfeeding- they have great stretch and hold their shape very well.  I wore them as undershirts every time we went anywhere.  I've gotten a handful more for this pregnancy, and plan to wear them again postpartum for nursing.  Whatever you bring- make sure they are nursing friendly if you plan to breastfeed.
    • Sweater: Even in the middle of the summer, I plan to bring a light sweater or shawl.  You could even bring a robe if that's what you prefer - but not all three:)  I am cold-natured, and hospitals are notorious for freezing you out.  Also would be great to have something to cover up with while you are walking the halls.
  • Slippers-- You'll be up and moving around, walking your room, and the hospital hallways is important for recovery (and sanity).  I wore some slipper booties that I tossed in the trash before we went home.
For Baby
As bad as you want to, he/she doesn't need their own bag..
  • Beanie -- the hospital usually provides one, but I had some custom made for the twins and again for this little girl.  This is a total preference, but I just love these beanies for my teeny baby's heads.  I'm not usually one for a monogram, but they are just perfection.
  • Take Home Outfit -- I picked out something easy - just the sweetest little sleeper outfit (to match her beanie).  Since I'm not totally sure what size she'll need, I have packed both newborn and 0-3 months.  You could also do just a onesie and stretchy pants. Keep in mind that gowns aren't able to be used in the car seat - so leave those for home wear:)  Don't forget the socks to keep those teeny toes toasty!
Don't Forget
  • Camera & charger
  • Laptop/tablet/iPad & charger
  • Cell phone & charger
  • Any meds you're taking (talk to your doctor first, obviously) -- I have packed my prenatal vitamins and Omega-3's
  • Insurance card/ID/etc: --They'll ask for them in the mountain of paperwork you'll be signing at check in and check out.
  • Boppy or other nursing pillow (if you're breastfeeding) -- I didn't bring the My Breast Friend Twin Pillow or the Boppy the first go round, but really wished I had.  When I was first learning to breastfeed I would set up mountains of pillows around me - and it still didn't get both of us in the right position.  I definitely have this ready to go!
  • Car seat -- You don't need this until you're leaving, so it can just stay in the car. You can also bring your car seat cover - if that's something you have preference for.  Winter/Summer babies probably would appreciate the protection from the sun/cold.

Stuff You Think You Need, but Probably Don't

  • Underwear (other than what you wear in) -- I brought several pair of oversized cheap cotton panties that I planned to wear and toss, but, really the hospital provided mesh panties is the only way to go.  I didn't get into real panties until I got home.  I couldn't hurt to bring, but I can all but promise you wont be wearing them.
  • More than one newborn outfit -- Like I mentioned earlier, I way overpacked and brought outfits for the twins that they never wore.  The hospital gave use little t-shirts and swaddle blankets for your own use, so you really only need something for the trip home.  You better believe I'll have extra hairbows and such, but anything else I plan to leave at home.
  • Newborn care items -- The hospital gives you everything!  My hospital is 'baby friendly' and does not provide a pacifier, but everything else- you name it: diapers, wipes, snot sucker, blankets, whatever you can think of.  We went home with a TON of stuff, even a couple Halo braind swaddle sleep sacs (amazing).
  • Diaper bag -- you don't need any newborn care items, so you don't need a diaper bag.  As bad as you want to bring it (I did and didn't need it) just leave it behind. It will get its fair share of use.
  • Pads -- When I was packing my hospital bag for my stay with the twins, every single blog/site I landed on told me to bring pads. The hospital will give you some that are BIG enough and absorbent enough for what you need - you cant actually get those at the store:)  I'm telling you, mesh panties and giant hospital pads all the way.
  • Nipple cream/pads -- the hospital provided these. Parker and Jolie HATED the nipple cream and even if I had just a teeny bit they would scream their head off - so I have doubt I will use it this time at all..
  • Breast Pump -- I brought my own, but ended up using the hospital grade they provided during my stay, so I don't plan to bring it this time.  After nursing the twins I always pumped just so I could make sure I was telling my body I needed to make more for feeding two!
When I first sat down to write this post, the very thought stressed me out and made me a tad overwhelmed- but its not so bad.  Hopefully this is helpful- I am notorious for going back and reading my own blog posts for reference - and I am pretty sure this will be referenced a couple more times before little miss is here and again for the next babe (next babe?!)

I'm packed and ready!

Postpartum: 5 Things They Don’t Tell You

I’m 7 ½ months into this new life as a mom and totally loving every minute of it.  These girls are my whole world.  In these last few months since becoming a mother, I’ve become a wise woman (not) and learned many a-things along the way.   During pregnancy I read all about what’s happening to my changing body and growing belly-  how the bab(ies) are growing, what new developments they have this week, and all that jazz. I also read up on birth and all the different types of methods there are- normal births, c-sections.. and then, if you are like me, you end up on bed rest with about a million hours of daylight to kill, and scouring Pinterest and blogs finding that anything remotely related to pregnancy and motherhood seems interesting enough to read.   Yet, for some reason, no one ever prepared me for what happened to my body afterwards. Maybe because it isn't pretty and probably nothing that one would want to talk/blog/exploit here on the world wide web.  Ok, so not that terrible, but definitely surprised me.
Your hair might fall out. I know. Don't you feel pretty now? Here I was all excited and swooning over my luscious locks while pregnant- I could wash it once a week (I know) blow dry and curl it, and it looked amazing, even after sleeping on it (I know).  Perhaps it looked so good the next morning because I didn’t actually sleep on the regular (pregnancy insomnia got the best of me).  But, when Dr. Walsh gave me 20 minutes to shower and clean up, I obliged.  So, it was all too good to be true to be able to ‘fluff’ and go when I needed to.   Well, sorry Cinderella but the party is over and the hair fairy wants her glass slippers back. Lame.  This is one of those wonderful hormone side effects that can come with giving birth.  Around 5 months postpartum I started losing my hair. This is normal, as any doctor will assure you, but it sure is a lot. In the shower, my hair seems to fall out in chunks, and then after blow drying, I literally have to sweep my bathroom floor and counter top to remove the layer of hair left behind.  Even still, at 7 ½ month postpartum, I’m losing my hair.  Much less of it, but I still notice it on a daily basis. To be honest, I have had three people in the last week ask if I've cut my hair.  February was the last time I had it cut.  Apparently this hair loss business can happen for up to a year. Yikes!
You might be hot. No, not good hot. Gross and sweaty hot. Thank you, hormones. Once again they may be to blame for giving me these hot flashes and causing me to wake up more than once a night in a sweat (like drenched-change-my-clothes sweaty).  Nothing says sexy like a woman who's losing her hair and walking around like she just ran a 5K..because I only can attest truth for one of those things, and it’s not the running one.  I was once very cold-natured, carrying a sweater everywhere with me, and now I practically die of heat at least once a day.  Typically I break a sweat after pumping while at work.  I know- so awesome.

You might go blind {as a bat}.  There is good reason for why they don’t recommend getting your eyes checked while pregnant.   Changes in hormones (always the culprit!), metabolism, fluid retention, and blood circulation can all affect your eyes and your eyesight during pregnancy.  Usually these are small changes, but it could affect how well your glasses or contacts correct your vision.  Most women experience minor if any noticeable change. But, no.. not me.  I cannot see the television guide while sitting 5 feet from the screen.  I can’t read street signs.  I can hardly drive at night with confidence.  I have completely given up on reading a digital clock that is outside a 1 ½ foot radius. Completely ridiculous.  In most cases, these changes are temporary and will reverse themselves within several months of delivery.  Here I am 7 ½ months out and still waiting for my vision to return from vacation.  I think I need to make an appointment.

You might starve.  Or die of thirst.. whichever one comes first.  I thought this would gradually come to a halt as the months went by, but oh no.. still got it.   I am exclusively breast feeding my girls (in addition to cereal, fruits, and veggies) and pretty much graze all day long.  I feel like I’m dying of hunger at least twice a day.  I am starved especially just after nursing (or pumping if I’m at work).  The hubby always makes sure to have a snack and beverage ready for me when I get home because I’m usually walking in the door to feed the girls.  Good news is that all these calories are actually being used when breast feeding to keep energy levels up as well as to keep my milk supply at its peak. You need an extra 400-500 calories for a singleton, and 800-1,000 calories when nursing twins.  I can tell in my supply if I haven’t had enough fluids or healthy fats in my diet.  I usually drink plenty of water throughout my day, not to mention the little extra I get from fruits and veggies.

You might be forced into time management.  I’ve learned that with twins (and I’m sure with a singleton baby, too!) I am the last person on the list to get ‘ready’ and out the door.  These girls have got to eat, get a clean diaper, dressed, and loaded up.  Getting into the car takes at least 10 minutes.  I’ve learned to do my once 2-hour routine (don’t judge me) in all of about 25-30 minutes.  Hair, make-up, and fully clothed.  I have been known to forget my shoes and last minutes run inside to grab them.. but I always have my earrings on!  My new shortened routine has been especially helpful in the mornings before work when sleep seems so much more important than wearing makeup.. but then I realized I speak and counsel people for a living and probably should look presentable.  Hence the make-up routine in less than 12 minutes, and most often my hair is dirty.  What matters is that I’m able to get somewhere on time (for the most part) and typically being/seeming put together myself and toting happy-fully-bellied babies.

So there you have it.  5 things I currently deal with and have come to accept in this new role as momma.  Even though it’s been almost 8 months, I’m still humbled on a daily basis the many blessings that have been placed upon me.  So.. even if my hair is falling out.. or my grocery budget is through the roof, or my newly sweaty-nature produces even more laundry to do, I don’t really care/mind.

Being a mom to these two is totally worth it.  I mean.. seriously.

Can I get an AMEN.
